2024 best of the blogs

As we bid farewell to 2024, it's time to reflect on an eventful year for public services. This year has been marked by the inauguration of a new government, bringing with it new energy, new missions and new milestones.

As we look back on the year gone, we thought we would share some of our favourite articles from 2024. These pieces highlight the hot topics, emerging trends, and the breadth of our efforts in public services over the past 12 months.

We hope you enjoy revisiting these articles and join us in looking forward to another year of working towards our mission – to make public services better, more sustainable and more connected to communities.

  1. Brokering a new social contract 🔗 Professor Donna Hall argues that local government is uniquely positioned to play a huge role in the rebuilding of a new social contract between the public and public servants.

  2. Public services must welcome partnership and prevention 🔗 Children’s social care is pointing the way towards the use of working in partnership to deliver public services that prevent crisis by focusing on early, targeted help, says MV's Emmet Regan.

  3. Budget creates a window of opportunity for Radical Place Leadership 🔗 The Local Government Association has welcomed the Chancellor’s additional £1.3 billion for councils for the next financial year. Professor Donna Hall and Andrew Laird argue that while this extra funding will not fix the underlying weaknesses in the system, it will provide a little breathing space… and a very small window of opportunity to explore a new and radical way of working. This opportunity is not to be missed.

  4. We can't tackle economic inactivity without joined-up work and health services 🔗 Last month saw the publication of the government's plan to 'Get Britain Working' and tackle economic inactivity among the working age population. The plan relies on the NHS and employment services working hand-in-hand. John Copps looks at where we are now and what needs to happen to realise that goal.

  5. The role of Place Leadership in building community resilience 🔗 Yvonne Reinhardt argues that radically different, place-based approaches to public service delivery can help improve the resilience of local communities.
